When a store or building undergoes upgrading or maintenance, a scheduled power shutdown may be required.

Shutting down a refrigeration system is not as simple as switching off the power.
A controlled shutdown procedure is essential to protect the system, prevent refrigerant leaks, and minimise the risk of equipment damage.

A trained refrigeration technician should oversee the entire shutdown and restart process to ensure the system is safely returned to operation.

Pump Down the Refrigeration System

The technical work begins with pumping down the refrigeration system in a controlled manner. Throughout the process, our technicians carry out the necessary checks to ensure the system remains safe and stable.

Power Restoration

Once the building’s upgrading or maintenance work is completed, power is restored in a controlled sequence. Rather than switching on all systems at once, we restart the refrigeration equipment progressively—typically the chillers first, followed by the freezers—to ensure each system operates safely and remains stable.

We then verify that every unit reaches its required operating temperature and continue to monitor the systems until they are running normally.

Preparing for a Scheduled Power Shutdown

Scheduled During Non-Operational Hours

To minimise disruption to business operations, power shutdowns are scheduled outside operating hours. The entire shutdown and restoration process can take up to 10 hours, depending on the size and complexity of the refrigeration systems.

Prepare Dry Ice

When the refrigeration systems are shut down, dry ice can be used to help keep chilled and frozen products at a safe temperature. Alternatively, products may be transferred to another cold storage location until power is restored.

Transition Time

Following power restoration, chillers and freezers need time to cool back to their operating temperatures. Freezers generally take longer than chillers and may require several hours before reaching the required temperature.
